Some color asks a lot of you. A solid, all-over lightening job draws a hard line at the root within a month, and from then on the calendar is in charge rather than you. Hand-painted color works the other way round. Balayage is swept down the mid-lengths and ends and left softer near the root, so as your hair grows the transition simply travels down with it. There is no line to chase, because there was never a line.

That is why lived-in color suits people with no spare hours in the week. Three to four months between balayage appointments is normal, and you still look deliberate rather than overdue. If the tone drifts warm before you are due back, a $60 gloss is a half-hour fix that buys several more weeks without touching the placement.
